An aquaculture farmer should monitor the Salinity level of water atleast one a day.

Salinity  is defined as the total concentration of dissolved ions in water, the major contributors towards the same are calcium, sodium, potassium, bicarbonate, chloride and sulfate. Salinity is reported as parts per thousand (ppt, grams of salt per kilogram of water). Ideally, the salinity level of water should be within 15-32 ppm.

In the case of Pond water, conductivity is a determinant of water quality, or pollution levels. Distilled water’s conductivity is on a lower side that it’s considered an insulator. If minerals and metals are suspended in it, ions form which can have an impact on the conductivity of the Pond Water.

These can be measured as conductivity of the pond water. Conductivity of water is essential because it reveals water’s salinity and the concentration of minerals and contaminants. Conductivity tests substantiates the connection between soil conditions and drought, heavy rain, and other environmental conditions that could affect farming and crop yield.

TDS refers to Total Dissolved Solids and measures the total concentration of Dissolved Substances in Pond Water. TDS comprises of inorganic salts as well as a small amount of organic matter. Common inorganic salts that can be found in water are calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium, which are all captions, and carbonates, nitrates, bicarbonates, chlorides and sulfates.
